ShmuelJerusalem is a fully modern city complete with skyscrapers, light-rail transit, modern expressways and more.

However developing the city over the last seventy years has been a challenge.  Very often earth moving equipment uncovers older layers of the 3000 year old capital of Israel.

When that happens the Israel Antiquities Authority is called in to do an “emergency dig” to see if what has been uncovered has unique historical interest and value. If it does, city planners may reroute a road or force the developer to build their project on stilts to allow for the preservation and further excavation of the site.

Recently, impressive remains of a Jewish village from the Hasmonean period, approximately 2000 years ago, are currently being uncovered in a salvage excavation conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority in the Sharafat neighborhood of Jerusalem, where an elementary school will be built.

The excavation, funded by the Moriah Jerusalem development corporation, on behalf of the Jerusalem municipality, has yielded remains of a large wine press containing fragments of many storage jars, a large columbarium cave (rock-cut dovecote), an olive press, a large ritual bath (mikveh, in addition to another mikveh previously discovered at this site), a water cistern, rock quarries and installations.
