What Is a Dreidel?

Chanukah Dreidels

Each Dreidel has four sides

A dreidel (Hebrew: סביבון, sevivon) is a four-sided spinning top traditionally played with during the Jewish holiday of Chanukah.

Each side of the dreidel bears a Hebrew letter: נ (Nun), ג (Gimel), ה (Hei), and פ (Pei).

These letters stand for the phrase:
“נס גדול היה פה” — Nes Gadol Hayah Poh
“A great miracle happened here.”

This phrase refers to the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem—despite there being only enough oil for one day. That miracle is the heart of the Chanukah celebration.

A Brief History of Chanukah Dreidels

The dreidel game, using Chanukah dreidels, dates back centuries and is rooted in Jewish resilience.

During times of persecution by the Syrian Greeks, when Torah study was forbidden, Jewish children would use spinning tops as a cover—pretending to play games while secretly learning.

Over time, the dreidel became a cherished symbol of Chanukah, representing both joy and defiance.

In the diaspora, dreidels often have the letter ש (Shin) instead of פ (Pei), changing the phrase to “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham” — A great miracle happened there [in Israel].

But since our dreidels come from Israel, they proudly say “here”—because the miracle happened right here where we are shipping them to you from!

How to Play with Chanukah Dreidels

A dreidel in each package of GGOO or Honey!

Playing dreidel is simple and fun for all ages. Here’s how:

1. Gather your players and give each person an equal number of game pieces—these can be chocolate coins (gelt), nuts, candies, or any small items.
2. Everyone puts one piece into the pot to start.
3. Players take turns spinning the dreidel. The letter it lands on determines what happens:
• נ (Nun) – Do nothing.
• ג (Gimel) – Take the whole pot!
• ה (Hei) – Take half the pot.
• פ (Pei) – Put one piece into the pot.
4. When the pot is empty or one player has all the pieces, the game ends—or you can start a new round with your collection of Chanukah dreidels!
