Galilee Farmers in the Early 1900s Experimented with Many Crops…
Most of the settlements in the Galilee in the early 20th century were based on agriculture. These Jewish pioneers experimented with many crops that might produce big profits to help their struggling communities.
Crops included silk, jasmine perfume and tobacco, but none of them were sustainable nor profitable. In the end the farmers resigned themselves to the hard toil of wheat and barley production with some apple and olive orchards.
This picture above of the local farmers harvesting tobacco was taken in Yavne’el in 1928. Personally we prefer the olive orchards 🙂
