In September of 1993 the Labor (Left) Government in Israel led by Yitzchak Rabin and Shimon Peres shocked Israel and the world by the surprise announcement that an accord had been reached with Yasser Arafat and his PLO terror organization.
The “Israeli Left,” the self-declared “Peace Camp” claimed that by negotiating with your enemy, even if they were terrorists, we had a chance to give peace to the war-weary Israeli people. Anyone who disagreed was “Anti Peace”
Those on the “Israeli Right” and most of the Religious community felt that the PLO was only using a different tactic by negotiating with Israel, but their strategy was still the same as Hamas — the destruction of the State of Israel.
After the Oslo Accords were signed a terror onslaught was unleashed by the Palestinians, murdering over a thousand Israel citizens.
A grass roots movement began made up of mostly religious and right-wing settlers to protest, and to either slow down, or stop the Oslo “peace process.”
These protesters were vilified as war-mongers and anti peace. Nothing could be further from the truth. They wanted peace, but they understood that giving guns, money and territory to terrorists was not the way to bring peace.
During those tense years I decided to write a novel to help people understand the real motivations of the right-wing religious settlers and how they perceived the coming disaster that would result from appeasing terrorists.
The book was called THE JERUSALEM CONSPIRACY written under my pseudonym “Charles Samuel.” It became an instant best seller in Israel. Sadly, it is as fresh and relevant today as it was then – whether we are discussing what is happening in Israel or America today.
