A new study released by researchers at the University of Seville proves that extra virgin olive oil is an effective agent in the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
We already know that there is a strong correlation between the Mediterranean diet and lower incidences of rheumatoid arthritis. Demographic data shows that people living in Mediterranean countries experience a much lower rate of rheumatoid arthritis. But what particularly about this diet makes the difference to arthritis?
Extra Virgin Oil Oil Reduced Inflammation in Mice
Researchers in the Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology group at Seville set out to answer this question. They conducted a live study using two groups of mice. The study spanned two months. The mice were divided into two groups: one was fed extra virgin olive oil and the other was fed sunflower oil.
The impact of the extra virgin olive oil diet was observable both physically and on the tissue level. The high content of polyphenols in extra virgin olive oil slowed down the process of inflammation. Mice who had inflammation in their joints showed visible signs of improvement when consuming extra virgin olive oil. The mice consuming sunflower oil did not experience the same results.
Maria Angeles Rosillo, lead researcher was very excited by the results, saying “The consumption of extra virgin olive oil helps to reduce the development of rheumatoid arthritis…it can be useful alongside drug therapy to help prevent and treat this disease.”
The next step for the research team, in collaboration with the university hospital Virgen del Rocio in Seville is to conduct clinical trials.
