It has been a long-held tradition by the Sages of the Torah for parents to teach their children how to swim. This is an essential survival skill and our family agreed.

Every Monday after school, the kids and I would drive across town to one of the city’s best swim schools. The drive took 25 minutes each way in rain or snow, but it was worth it.

Eunice, their instructor, was an elementary teacher by profession. She taught for over 20 years, but was let go at a time when schools were being closed. Needing to redefine herself, Eunice decided to learn how to swim. She loved both swimming and children so she opened up her own swim school where my kids became strong proficient swimmers.

I will never forget one evening after classes when I saw Eunice squeezing a golden liquid out of a plastic bottle and “shmeering” it all over her body. I asked her what was in the bottle. She said that it was olive oil, “the best body lotion ever!”

Eunice spent her day in chlorinated water that completely dried out her skin. One day she thought about trying olive oil and never stopped. She refused to towel-dry herself, but would work the oil in for 10 minutes and presto, her skin was glowing and healthy!

So what is the best non food use for olive oil? Just Shmeer It!
