We should be calling this a “Mediterranean Salad with Goat Cheese.”
The Greeks don’t have a monopoly on sheep, goats or delicious cheese made from their milk in this part of the world. Since 2002, “feta” has been a “copyrighted” product by the European Union. Only cheeses produced in a traditional way in particular areas of Greece, which are made from sheep’s milk, or from a mixture of sheep’s and up to 30% of goat’s milk from the same area, can be called “feta”. However, similar white-brined cheeses (often called “white cheese” in various languages) are found in the Eastern Mediterranean and around the Black Sea.
Israel is internationally known for our yummy dairy products. You can pick them up in our local supermarkets and some products even internationally.
However in this part of the Galilee some people make their own. Here’s a picture of our neighbor’s son Eliyahu milking his own goat… he loves making his own “feta cheese” for breakfast.
And here’s a recipe for our version of our “Galilee Greek Salad”
