Summer in Israel is BBQ season.
Growing up I loved chicken winigs. Some people don’t like them at all, so you can substitute parts of a whole chicken, or just the pieces you prefer.
One of my favorites was Honey Garlic Chicken wings. However in Israel, honey means something different.
When the Torah refers to the “Land of Milk and Honey” it is referring to Date Honey. We call this yummy syrup, Silan in Hebrew. The results are a bit different than if you used ‘bee honey’, but I think they are more delicious!
When you are shopping for Silan, make sure it is 100 percent date syrup with no sugar or other ingredients added.
Ingredients:
- 12 chicken wings
- 3 tablespoons Galilee Green Olive Oil
- 4 tablespoons Silan (date honey syrup)
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon tamari or soya sauce
Directions:
- First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. (Or fire up BBQ!)
- Place the wings (or chicken parts from a whole cut up chicken) in a large mixing bowl
- Rub the chicken liberally with Galilee Green Olive Oil (GGOO)
- In a separate smaller bowl, pour in the Silan, garlic powder and tamari sauce and mix well. Add a teaspoon of GGOO and a teaspoon or two of water if the mixture is too thick.
- Add the ‘honey’ mixture to the chicken wings and mix thoroughly to make sure the wings are coated well and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
- Spread the chicken wings on baking paper in an oven-proof dish.
- Bake for 1/2 hour turn the chicken and back for another 20 minutes.
- Serve hot with a side dish of sweet potatoes and onions!!
