In the diaspora, we traditionally fried Potato Latkes for Chanukah. When we moved to Israel, I discovered the fried favorite food for Chanukah are sufganiot – strawberry jelly-filled donuts sprinkled with icing sugar. I’ve never made sufganiot before so I searched for an easy recipe that I hoped would be yummy.

I found an amazing post by JEWLISH making the rounds on Facebook on how to make the perfect sufganiyot in a Ziploc bag.

I had to see if would work.  Would I get the light and fluffy result?  Would they be greasy?

The ease in making these surprised me and the taste surpassed my expectations.  And it was so much fun to make.

Ingredients:

ingredients

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons dry yeast
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoons brandy
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 ½ tablespoons of Galilee Green Olive Oil
  • 1 egg
  • Any flavored jam to fill the donut
  • ½ to ¾ cup Galilee Green Olive Oil for frying

Directions:

  1. All all ingredients in the order that they are listed into a large ziplock bag
  2. Mix up the ingredients in the bag very well to make a dough
  3. Place the bag in a bowl of warm water for one hour
  4. Be sure not to have the water too hot so as not to over poof the yeast
  5. Be sure that your rolling surface is well floured
  6. Remove the dough from the bag and add some more flour if the dough is too sticky until the dough is stretchy and not too sticky
  7. Roll out the dough gently to a half inch thickness and make round shapes with a glass
  8. Cover the shapes with a towel for 30 minutes
  9. Heat up the frying oil to a medium/high heat
  10. Fry the donuts for 1 minute on each side
  11. Remove the donut and place them on a plate lined with paper towel
  12. Use a squeeze bottle with a long spout to add the jam to the donut
  13. Sprinkle the donut with icing sugar and try not to eat too many
  14. Makes 12-14 three inch donuts
  15. ENJOY!!!

They weren’t greasy at all and best eaten right away.

Happy Chanukah and blessings for a life full of miracles, light, good health and joy!
