Who doesn’t love going to weddings?
It’s a time for celebrating the building of a new home with great food and lots of dancing. Most Israeli weddings are fairly casual affairs. You are often given the choice of fish or mushroom sauce over a potato bureka for the appetizer.
I usually choose the fish because I try to avoid the pastry dough in the bureka. The bureka is just a base for the mushroom sauce which is the delicious part.
Here is a classic mushroom sauce. It is really peppery (Israeli style) and you’ll be amazed by how few ingredients it has. There are so many uses for this sauce and it is so easy to make. Try it over pasta shells or rice as an appetizer or over mashed potatoes as a side dish. It can also dress up a meatloaf or go with your favorite chicken recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1 onion chopped
- 4 tablespoons Galilee Green Olive Oil
- 2 pints washed and sliced fresh mushrooms
- ¼ cup red wine
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Directions:
- Saute chopped onions in oil until translucent
- Add mushroom, mixing them in with the sauted onions
- Cover and simmer until the mushrooms have shrunk. There will also be approximately 1 cup or more of sauce at the bottom of the pan.
- Add red wine, pepper, salt and simmer for another 5 minutes
This Classic Mushroom Sauce is ready to serve and is really delicious.
ENJOY!!

Thank you so much for posting this recipe! I make these mushrooms once a week now. They are healthy and delicious! I eat them over buckwheat or quinoa. I’ll be cooking a lot more of your recipes, they all look so good! I live in NC, USA but love to try different cuisine. Please post more Israeli recipes. I’ll be forever thankful 🙂 God bless Israel and her people!!
